Battery Terminal Corrosion
Over a period of time dampness reacts with all electrical connections including the battery terminals to cause corrosion. This will result in either a poor elecrtical connection or no connection at all to the Mini's electrical components. This problem is particularly prevalent in the winter months during cold damp weather. Imagine getting into your Mini on a cold damp winter's morning, starting the engine and nothing happens. This could be a corroded battery terminal. It can be avoided by simply coating the battery terminals in a layer of petroleum jelly (Vaseline) or multipurpose grease. You will need to wash off the corrosion with boiling water before applying the petroleum jelly or grease. If the battery terminals are not treated they will eventually rot away and will need to be replaced with new battery terminals.
All other electrical connections can also be affected by corrosion so if you have a problem with any electrical component the first and simplest thing to check is whether any of the connections have corroded. This is done by simply disconnecting the connection and looking to see if there is any corrosion. Corrosion normally appears as a greeny white powder. You only need enough to insulate the connection from working and it can sometimes be a very small amount which may not be obvious to the naked eye. Scrape the connection with a small screw driver or wire brush and reconnect. It is normally as simple as that. After cleaning it is a good idea to spray the connection with something like WD40 or coat with a layer of multipurpose grease to help stop the dampness penetrating the connection to prevent the corrosion process continuing.
