Fixing Oil Leaks on your Classic Mini Engine and Gearbox

Oil leaks can be rife on a Mini engine and gearbox . The older and the higher the mileage the Mini the worse the oil leaks can be. Apart from ware and tare rubber perishes with age, heat and the chemical affects of the oil and impurities. There are many places that oil can leak from a classic Mini engine. The worst offenders are often the rod gear change oil seal on the underside of the gearbox, the crankshaft rear oil seal in the clutch housing, the oil seal at the radiator end of the crankshaft in the timing gear cover and the differential output to driveshaft oil seals in the differential casing. Oil will drip from the bottom of the clutch housing if the crankshaft rear oil seal is worn for quite a time before it renders the clutch plate useless resulting in clutch slip. These oil seals are affected by more movement and heat than most other seals on the Mini engine and oil can leak out of them badly given time. Inspecting these oil seals and replacing them when they start to leak will very effectively help to alleviate those oily marks deposited on the drive or garage floor. Apart from being wasteful and polluting oil leaks can make the Mini owner somewhat unpopular with other members of the family!
