The original Mini from 1962 was fitted with the sealed beam unit. This was in fact just a big bulb incorporating the lens, element and back reflector as a sealed unit. As time progressed the halogen bulb was introduced. This was a more modern way of producing electric lighting which burned whiter and brighter giving much better visibility. The classic Mini adopted the H4 halogen headlight units around 1990.
There are 2 designs and size
of headlamp retaining rim. The early one, 18mm deep was used with the original Lucas
half inner bowl. The later one, 16.3mm deep, was introduced with
the Cooper SE and Minis from 1990 using the quadoptic lights. The Wipac plastic headlamp bowl, which will fit the sealed beam and
quadoptic headlamp units as well, has the later rim and the whole unit is a simpler design all together.
