Different Types of Wheel Nuts – Which do I Choose for my Mini?
The wheel nuts you require depend on the type of wheels you have not the
type of studs, as many people think.
All Classic Mini wheel nuts and studs are the same thread size which is
3/8 inch UNF. The only difference in the stud options is the length.
It is important to have the correct nuts for the wheels you have from a
safety point of view. If you have non standard aftermarket wheels and are
unsure which nuts you require you need to contact the manufacturers or
retailers of the wheels you have.
In our category
page you will see the range of wheel nuts we have by scrolling down the
page or if you simply place “wheel nut” into the search the whole range will
come up on your screen.
There should be sufficient information in the product description to
identify their correct application.
The early 10 inch steel wheels used round
chamfered wheel nuts and there is a chrome
wheel nut as an option.
The later cars which had 12 inch steel wheels had 60
degree tapered cone seating wheel nuts and there is a chrome
60 degree tapered seating wheel nut as an option.
The latest Coopers and other limited editions of the 1990s used a wheel
nut which was specifically designed for the Superlight wheels fitted to
those cars. There was another
version of this wheel nut which was originally fitted to the alloy wheels
on the Mini Ritz and Chelsea models.
The only difference is cosmetic; the Superlight wheel nuts have a
stainless steel sleeve over the top which gives them a prettier look. The
Chelsea Ritz version is simpler and there is no danger of the sleeve coming
loose as there is not one.
A word of warning about the Superlight wheel nuts, it is advisable to use
a six sided wrench to tighten them. If a multisided socket is used it will
distort the stainless steel sleeve which will eventually come loose and fall
off altogether.
