Modifying Mini Engine Mountings for Easy Fitting to the Front Subframe
Fitting a Mini engine to the subframe is always a fiddly business. To hold the setscrews secure on the top side of the Mini engine mounting whilst fitting the nuts and washers to the underside of the subframe is difficult. This can be made a less onerous task by using engine mountings fitted with captive nuts. Ready made engine mountings with captive nuts are available but these can be quite expensive compared with the standard engine mountings. There is a simple solution that can save a few quid and takes only a little time if you are handy with a welder.
What you need to do is weld nuts to the standard engine mounting allowing the setscrews to be fitted from the underside of the subframe. What you require to weld each nut is two 5/16 inch UNF nuts and a 3/4 inch long setscrew to secure each nut you are welding. Take one of the nuts and screw it onto the set screw right up to the head. Then place the set screw through the hole in the engine mounting from the topside as it would be on the Mini. Making sure that the setscrew is central in the engine mounting hole take the second 5/16 inch nut and screw it onto the setscrew tightening it to secure it. You can then weld the nut on the topside of the engine mounting to the engine mounting. The head of the setscrew will protect the thread of the captive nut from weld spatter allowing the setscrew to be screwed back out again leaving a clean thread in the nut.
