Reduce Brake Fluid Loss when Dismantling any Part of your Brake Lines or Clutch System




Working on brake lines is a messy business. As soon as you undo any brake pipe or brake pipe union brake fluid will spill everywhere unless you are careful.

Your brake master cylinder filler cap is vented so that the brake fluid can flow back and forth freely. This allows the system to work properly. 

There is a simple way to reduce fluid loss and make less mess. All you need is a small piece of sheet plastic, part of a plastic bag or bin liner. Undo the cap on the master cylinder and place the plastic sheet over the filler hole. Then screw the filler cap back on trapping the plastic. This will form a seal stopping the air getting into the master cylinder causing a vacuum effect on the fluid level. It will help prevent the fluid in the system moving out through the disconnected part of the brake line. In addition a golf tee or any piece of tapered plastic is extremely useful for blocking the end of a brake pipe. This method can equally be used on your clutch master cylinder as well as your brake master cylinder.
